PARENTS: YOU ARE THE KEY TO YOUR TEEN’S SAFETY

Your role as the parent of a teen driver starts with knowing the graduated licensing laws that we have in Georgia. These laws are making a difference in saving teen lives, but studies show that parents are not doing a good job of enforcing them. Start by having a conversation with your teen about the laws and why it’s important in your family to follow them. Laws pertaining to curfew and the limited number of teen passengers are due to the large number of teen crashes that resulted from those situations.

Safe America has some resources for parents to help you for this conversation with your teen:

  1. Print out the Teen Driver/Parent Agreement from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) and review with your teen: http://www.gahighwaysafety.org/pdf/tpda.pdf

Another source we have found to be particularly useful is www.teendriversource.org which is a website of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia courier services. There is a section on the site for both teens and parents and also downloadable research materials for more on this topic.
